Today’s helping came through a recommendation, and I’m so incredibly grateful that it did. There’s been a lot of reading in this challenge so far. I’ve read books, short stories, and poetry. But somehow, it never occurred to me to read a children’s book. You may think that the reason for this is self-evident, given that I’m not a child. But I am one of those adults who adores picture books. They are often sweet, adorable, and slyly subversive, and the images are usually gorgeous. So I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me until now to feature a children’s book. Thankfully, a recommendation came in for Niño Wrestles the World by Yuyi Morales, and I absolutely loved it.
Specifically, I loved watching this video of the author reading the book out loud. Yuyi Morales is such an expressive storyteller, and her love for this story just shines through in her reading of it. The story is adorable, but it is her animated delivery that really makes it come to life. If you have children in your life, or if you’re an overgrown child like me, I highly recommend giving Niño Wrestles the World a go.
One final note. I’ve been trying to experience as many different art forms as I can for this challenge. But as today proves, I’m still missing out on whole genres, however inadvertently. If there’s something I’m clearly missing, please let me know. I want to experience it all!
