In January of 2021, I featured a Yosakoi dance troupe called Maigen. At the time, I had no idea what Yosakoi dance was, and that particular Daily Hart required a fair amount of research on my part. I also had no idea that two and a half years later I would find myself in Kochi, Japan, the city where Yosakoi originated, and home to a massive Yosakoi festival every summer. But find myself in Kochi I did, and I spent hours in the Yosakoi museum looking at photos of past festivals and watching recordings of performances by dance troupes from all over the world. And basically falling in love with Yosakoi in general. It’s fun, energetic, colourful, and loud, and I want to be a part of it. Time to see if there’s a Yosakoi troupe in Paris that I can join…
