What immediately comes to mind when you think of tap dance? I know for myself, those words conjure up images of the golden age of Vaudeville or Broadway ensembles from classic musicals like 42nd Street. In other words, an art form from the past. That’s why I deliberately set out to change this connotation in my head. A couple of Google searches later, and my Youtube dash was overflowing with contemporary tap artists. That’s how I discovered this video by Syncopated Ladies. Let’s just say I pretty much loved everything about this number, so I quickly devoured the rest of their videos. Spoiler alert, they’re all incredible.
To be honest, I’ve always been fascinated by the actual motions of tap dancing. I’ve never understood how people can move their feet the way they do to produce the sounds that they do. After watching these videos, I still don’t have a clue how it works, but I’m just so happy that it does. Tap dancing is a beautiful art form, so rhythmic and precise. I don’t know why I ever thought that tap was a relic of the past, but I’ve never been happier to be wrong. Even if I still have no idea how it works. Seriously. I literally just tried to move my feet like that and I failed spectacularly, so I bow down before these gorgeous dancers.
