In 2021, SYA became the first Southeast Asian woman to sign with Def Jam Records. A hip hop artist from Malaysia, SYA has drawn controversy in the past as a Muslim rapper, but she continues to do things her own way, insisting that art and religion should be separate. Which means she’s continued to put out incredible music that is uncensored in what she wants. Music like “Madame“, where she makes it clear from the opening shot just exactly what she thinks of the patriarchy. In fact, this whole video screams badass in every frame and I am very much here for it. Enjoy!
