It was almost exactly eight years ago that I first heard the term ‘Resting Bitch Face‘, and I immediately knew what it meant. According to society, I have resting bitch face. I have been told on countless occasions that I look angry when I’m not actively engaging my facial expressions. I’ve been told time and time again that I look pissed off when I’m simply existing in the world. And it used to annoy the hell out of me. I can’t help that my neutral expression makes me look like I’m angry. That’s just the way my face is. Which was why I was delighted when ‘Resting Bitch Face’ became a pop culture phenomenon. I finally had something to explain it away.
But over time, that term began to rub me the wrong way, so when I saw the title of this video, I knew I had to press play. And I’m glad I did, because Olivia Gatwood sums up quite nicely the way I feel about my own resting bitch face. It’s just the way my face is, and I’m not changing it for the comfort of anyone else but me. Ode to my bitch face. Amen to that.
