I wanted to start this year’s challenge with a banger. And initially, I was going to feature The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. This movie is absolutely fantastic, full of incredible, beautiful, and fierce as hell women protagonists, and proves once and for all that Viola Davis is one of the best actors in history. Period. Full stop. She is an absolute Queen.
However, to both my disappointment and delight, I discovered that I’ve already featured Gina Prince-Bythewood when I wrote about her film The Old Guard during Challenge 1. Which is both awesome (yay women directors!) and annoying (boo no repetitions of artists), because I really, really wanted to write about The Woman King. But then the credits rolled and this spectacular song by Jessy Wilson began playing, and I knew I had my first daily helping of The Daily Hart Year III.
So there you have it. Challenge 3 is officially a go. All hail Queen Viola. Everyone should go watch The Woman King. Seriously. Go see it. It’s fantastic.
