I don’t know why I continue to be drawn to poems that chronicle just how cruel we’re all seemingly capable of being to each other. But Three Poems by Hannah Lowe certainly falls into that category. They may be short, but they encompass a staggering range of traumas, all centred on identity and belonging. They are also very powerful. Perhaps not the most semantically beautiful that I’ve read. But I also think that’s the point. They’re blunt, raw, and visceral. Just like the subjects Lowe is describing.
I hope that one day I will find poems about rainbows and unicorns. But for now, I’ll take the searing and thought-provoking poetry that challenges the status quo. Just because it’s uncomfortable, doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful.
