Paris recently hosted an exhibition of the work of Dinh Q.Lê. This Vietnamese American artist has been rarely shown in France, so of course I jumped at the opportunity to see his work up close.
What’s interesting about Dinh Q.Lê is that one of his signature mediums is photography. However, he doesn’t take the photos himself. Instead, he finds images from the news and portraits, and then weaves them together with other images, often stills from famous Hollywood movies. The resulting juxtapositions can be quite jarring at times, but that’s the point. They deconstruct the two original images, and they challenge you to consider the relationship between them.
I loved this exhibition, but it only had around 20 of Q.Lê’s works on display. Hopefully more of his work will be exhibited in Paris soon.
