Today’s daily helping came to me through a rec, and I think this may be my first poetry rec. And what a first, because “If We Must Die” is a seminal poem by Claude McKay. Perhaps one of the most famous poems in the world. Which is why I’m ashamed that it took me this long to discover it. “If We Must Die” is only 14 lines, but Claude McKay packs an ocean of anguish and fervour into this passionate call to arms. A battle cry that was inspired by the Red Summer of anti-Black violence in 1919, but whose words are universal. Words that have gone on to inspire generations of persecuted and marginalized people. It’s a powerful testament to the power of the pen.
