As a result of The Daily Hart, I’ve come to love and appreciate spoken word poetry in a way that I never have before. It’s always been something I’ve enjoyed. But I’ve come to understand just how powerful a medium it can be for people to speak their truth. Perhaps even cathartic. And it’s led me to discover pieces like “Dear Black Girl” by Candace Nicholas-Lippman. An extraordinarily powerful anthem of self-love and acceptance. Sure, there are many mediums through which Candace Nicholas-Lippman could have chosen to express these ideas. But there’s something about the spoken word format that amplifies them in the best way. Hopefully enough that every Black girl listening truly takes them to heart.
“Dear Black girl know that you, you are everything.” Amen.
