Hungary is one of the many countries where it’s become a much more scary place to be queer in recent years. In 2021, the conservative government of Viktor Orbán passed a law targeting “LGBTQ propaganda”. Which is ridiculous, because demanding your human rights is not propaganda. But I digress. Unfortunately, this law has resulted in the suppression of queer artists, but thankfully, many still thrive. For example, I recently came across the works of Budapest-based Barnabás Lakatos-Gelléri. His pieces are bright, vibrant, and wonderfully whimsical, and I love them. I can only hope that he will have a long and successful career. Hopefully one that is free from oppression.
