The photo above is from the official video of The Arrow by Matthew Richardson. However, the video that I discovered first was a live performance from 2016. They are both stunningly beautiful, but there’s something about the live performance that hits all the right notes for me. Maybe it’s the musicians playing alongside the acrobats. Or the immediacy of the live performance. Or maybe I’m just really missing being in a theatre right now. Whatever it is, I could watch this video all day.
The official video is dedicated to the memory of the 49 souls we lost in Orlando in June of 2016. I know I will never understand the violence of that night, because some things just aren’t meant to be understood. All I know is that love is just as powerful as hate, but it is infinitely more precious. More needed. Especially now.
In some ways, I feel like this year has managed to reveal both the best and the worst in all of us. All I can hope for is that going forward we heed the lessons of 2020 to forge a better path forward. To choose kindness and compassion over fear and anger. Choose empathy over vitriol. And at the end of the day, choose love over hate.
