Today’s daily helping came to me through a rec, and the result is that I am now borderline obsessed with Akala. “Shakespeare” may have been the song that was specifically recommended to me, but Akala has an extensive discography, and I’ve been happily devouring it all. And I do mean happily, because it is incredible what he does with language.
Quick side note. I’ve always been fascinated with languages. I love studying them and discovering how different languages are structured and express certain ideas. But I particularly love exploring how English, my native language, can be used in so many different ways. I love how a single language can be so malleable, and how artists can bend it in infinite different directions. How the actual structure of the language itself can become a work of art. It’s all fascinating, and I love it.
Which is one of the many reasons why I love Akala, because what he does with language is just extraordinary. The rhythms that he crafts and the way he bends words to his will is astonishing. Some might call it arrogance to claim to be Shakespeare reincarnated, but I say Akala is bang on the money.
